CONTRACTORS TO RESUME ABANDONED COCOA ROADS PROJECT SOON AFTER 2YEARS SUSPENSION ,SAID ROAD MINISTER

Eleven member independent Committee has been set up by the Ministry of Roads and Highways to monitor and supervise road contracts across the country.

The committee is mandated to ensure that Road contractors work according to specification given to them before government pays them.

The sector Minister, Hon Akwasi Amoako Atta announced to the media in an interview during a strategic management workshop organized by the ministry in Kumasi,with a theme,”Ghana Beyond Aid: Strategies for sustainable investment and asset preservation “.

“Before my ministry pays any contractor, we will make sure that the committee has done its own work before the specific contractor is paid”he said.

He indicated that, every road has its own lifespan if only it was done according to specification.

He warned that, the ministry will punish any road engineer who certify a road contraction and later found out by the committee that the said contractor did a shoddy work.

He said,the ministry will no longer entertain any Bitumen source
(Sapete3”) in the country because Ghanaians deserve better than that.

He noted that,the work of the independent committee at the ministry will help curtailed shoddy work among road contractor.

Hon Akwasi Amoako Atta also announced that,the President had directed the Minister of Finance to give 1 billion dollars from the Euro bond to the road sector to pay their outstanding debts to road contractors and use part of the money to contract new road.

“Within two years of Nana Addo led government,we have paid over 4 billion to road contractors and there still more to pay and that is why the President gave this directive ”

He also added that , the ministry of road and highways has taken over the responsibilities all cocoa roads initiated by the past NDC government administration and abandoned for sometime now.
” As I speak to you today, a joint technical committee from my ministry and that of cocoa board under the ministry of agriculture met over the past few days and produce a solid document ,which I have the privilege to present to cabinet on Thursday ,9th May,2019 on behalf of Senior Minister Hon. Yaw OSafo Maafo for approval “,he disclosed.

Stakeholders

He explained that ,the purpose of the exercise is to reconcile all the outstanding cocoa board roads payments and to identify various roads in various agencies ( Urban roads, feeder roads and Highways).
” I believed that after the presentation of the document to cabinet Thursday, 9th May 2019, there is going to be a directive from,H.E the President Nana Akufo Addo on how to tackle the payment of all outstanding cocoa roads projects”, he revealed.

He therefore stated that,all contractors working on cocoa road projects will be receiving letters from the various agency heads from next week and only selected ones may ask to return to site.

He commended the various contractors for exercise patience and established faith in npp government since the projects were suspended.

He appealed to them that ,they should continue working closely with government and all outstanding payment’s which are affecting their performance and also affecting soci-economic development of our nation will be thing of the past.
