KMA IS ON COURSE; TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE,SAID MAYOR

Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has assured that ,is ready to join hands in tackling climate change(Global Warming ).

According to the Metropolitan Mayor Hon.Osei Asibbey Antwi ,due to some policies initiated by the assembly to fight against global warming through
the green aspect of the “Keep Kumasi Clean and Green” project, Nine Hundred and Thirty-eight Thousand (938,000) seedlings of different tree species, both exotic and indigenous as well as Two Thousand (2,000) Coconut seedlings have been planted along water bodies and some ceremonial streets within the Metropolis to tackle Climate Change.

He said,the world has seen Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly tremendous effort on how to help combat Global warming ,the Covenant of Mayors in Sub- Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) of the Global Covenant Of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) has given Kumasi invitation to join the world Climate change Conference.

He stated that,the initiative by the European Union to support cities and towns in tackling climate change and encouraging access to clean and affordable energy in the local communities.

The Com SSA is a Regional Covenant, which forms part of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM). This body is the largest coalition of Mayors for tackling climate change. It currently includes over 7,500 leading cities worldwide.

He added that,the Mayors, as part of this body, will be expected commit to working towards setting ambitious targets for mitigation, designing adaptation plans and addressing access to energy in the line with the relevant national commitments
Developing policies and taking action to address the situation in our cities and communities through the development of strategy, implementation and monitoring and Sharing of visions, results, experience and know-how with fellow local and regional authorities through direct cooperation and peer-to-peer exchange.

He further revealed that, the membership will mobilise and share expertise, know-how, technology and financial resources that complement and strengthen local efforts, scale up capacity, foster innovation and boost investments.

He therefore called on Civil Society Organizations whose main focus is to tackle Climate Change should join hands with Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to pursue the Crusade against Global Warming and how to maintain the Climate Change in the universe.

The Metropolitan Mayor made addressed at the 1st Ordinary meeting of the 4th Session of the 7th Assembly at KMA Conference Hall.
